Five S     

Five S is a structured approach of maintaining an effective, efficient workplace through the elimination of waste that contributes to errors, defects, and injuries.  The five S’s together create an organized safe work environment through visual controls that compliment a Lean system and puts the operator in control of their own work environment. 

Ferguson and Associates offers Five S training and implemetation services for successful implementation of your Five S program.  From the office to the shop floor, Five S will bring order and efficiency to any organization.

Ferguson and Associates offers Five S training for all levels of the organization.  From the shop floor to the executive boardroom we have a program to meet your needs.  All sessions include workbooks, audit forms, red tag forms and, score cards for all attendees.

Executive Five S introduction:  Five S overview, methods to identify the Five S business advantage to improve efficiency, crerating a strategic implemetation plan, linking the Five S culture to your business strategy and , goal setting,

Five S Leader /  Manager training:  Includes the principles of Five S, Five S implementation planning, audit score cards, goal setting and, change management.

Implementation Team training: Includes the Five S principles, Five S implementation, red tag planning, audit processand , Five S boards.

Level V

Continuously Improve

 

 

Every space in the work area prevents storage or keeping excessive items.

 

Needed items can be retrieved within 30 seconds.

Cleanliness problem areas are identified and mess prevention actions are in place.  The entire work area is immaculate at all times.

Reliable methods and standards for housekeeping, daily inspections, and workplace arrangements are shared and are used throughout similar work areas.

Root causes are eliminated and improvement actions are focused on preventative actions.

Level IV

Focus on Reliability

 

Work area is using visual aids to prevent items from entering the area.

 

Needed items in work area are minimized in number and are properly arranged for retrieval and use.

 

Inspection occurs during daily cleaning of work areas and equipment, and supplies are restocked.

 

Reliable methods and standards for housekeeping, daily inspections, and workplace arrangements are documented and followed by all members of the work group.

Sources and frequency of problems are documented as part of the routine work, root causes are identified and corrective action plans are developed.

Level III

Make it Visual

 

Only needed articles can be found in the work area

 

 

Needed items are outlined, dedicated locations are properly labeled with name, number, and quantity.

Sources of spills and messes are identified and corrected; there is no need to spend extra time cleaning for visitors.

Work group has documented agreement on visual controls, labeling, and required quantities of needed items.

Work group is routinely checking area to maintain 5S agreements.

Level II

Focus on Basics

 

Needed and not needed items are identified and those not needed are removed from the work area.

Needed items are safely stored and organized according to frequency of use.

Key work area items to be checked are identified and acceptable performance levels documented.

Work group has documented agreements for needed items, organization, and work area controls.

Initial 5S level has been determined, and performance is documented and posted in work area.

Level I

Just Beginning

 

Needed and not needed items are mixed throughout the work area.

Items are placed randomly throughout the work place.

Minimal cleaning on an as-needed schedule.

Work area methods are not consistently followed and are undocumented.

Work area checks are randomly performed and there are no visual measurements of 5S performance.
